BIDEN AWARDS TROPHY TO ARMY AND ASKS 'WHERE ARE YOU, COACH?'

  • Army beat Navy football in December; coach Jeff Monken was standing nearby

President Joe Biden forgot to study his playbook when awarding a football trophy to Army's team Monday – asking 'Where are you' to the coach standing just feet away.

'We finally have coach Jeff Monken … back to the White House … Where are you, coach?' the president asked, while introducing notables at the top of an event awarding the commander-in-chief's trophy.

The coach he was welcoming was standing to the president's right, having walked into the East Room of the White House along with his victorious team.

The odd comment came after Biden, 81, acknowledged Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Army Secretary Charles Q. Brown, Jr., in remarks where he read from a pair of teleprompters.

Biden often delivers variations of the line when acknowledging lawmakers or VIPs during remarks, but that usually happens when they are standing amid a crowd or audience he is addressing.

He also acknowledged House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.), correcting his name after first calling him 'Stanford.'

It came at an event where he commended the team for 'toughness, tenacity, camaraderie, accountability' on and off the field.

The Army Black Knights won the trophy during their annual Army-Navy Game, defeating the Midshipmen 17-11 in December.

Biden said he was 'very proud' of the team, and 'not just for the wins, not just for those forced turnovers' but for putting on another uniform – representing the entire country,.

Biden cheered the team's wins over Air Force and rival Navy, during a season where it went 6-6.

'We’re here today to celebrate a tough team and 'a storied football program,' he said.
