JANNIK SINNER ISSUES INJURY UPDATE AFTER SUFFERING SCARE AHEAD OF US OPEN FINAL

Jannik Sinner is hopeful that the injury he suffered during his US Open semi-final win over Jack Draper is “nothing to be concerned about” although he acknowledges he will only know the full extent of the problem after some rest.

The world No 1 defeated Jack Draper to reach his second Grand Slam final as he looks to follow up his Australian Open title at the beginning of the year with another major.

Sinner, though, suffered an injury scare when he took a tumble at four all in the second set. He used his left hand to cushion the fall and required treatment from ATP physio Alejandro Resnicoff.

He was given the all-clear to continue and went on to win the match 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

The 23-year-old was asked about the injury during his post-match press conference and replied: “The physio loosened it up very fast on court, so after I felt okay in the beginning. Then after it went away by playing, which is good.

“Let’s see how it is tomorrow when it’s cold. It’s gonna be a different feeling. Hopefully it is nothing to be concerned about.

“I’m quite relaxed, because if it’s something bad, you feel it, straightaway a bit more. Yeah, let’s see how it is.”

Although he is right-handed, Sinner uses a double-handed backhand so it could impact his performance if he is not 100% for the final.

Daniil Medvedev suggests Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have replaced Djokovic, Nadal and Federer

The top seed will face Taylor Fritz in Sunday’s final at Arthur Ashe Stadium after the 26-year-old became the first American since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon 2009 to reach a Grand Slam final when he defeated his compatriot Frances Tiafoe in five sets.

The big-serving Fritz is looking to become the first American man in 21 years to win a major with Roddick the last to achieve the feat at the 2003 US Open.

“Big serve, very solid player from the back of the court. He can hit strong. He can hit with rotation. He can mix up the game very well,” Sinner, who is 1-1 with Fritz in their head-to-head record, said.

“He has played a lot this year, so he has a lot of rhythm of the match.”

Sinner knows the New York crowd will be rooting for his opponent.

“We’re in New York playing against an American … It’s normal. It’s like when I play in Italy, so I’m gonna accept that,” he said.

“I have my team and my people who are close to me. In my mind, I know that there are many people watching from home from Italy, and it’s just take some support from them.”
