WHAT HAPPENED?

With the score at 3-0 and Portugal all but home and dry, a fan took the chance to dash onto the pitch to take a selfie with Ronaldo. The young fan then ran and evaded several stewards before being caught on the side of the pitch.

Potentially inspired by the first successful invader, another tried their luck but were stopped in their tracks before fully reaching the Portuguese captain. Ronaldo was less impressed with the second invader and looked visibly annoyed to have the game stopped for a second time in ten minutes.

As the game ticked over into the 93rd minute, two more fans managed to find a way to enter the pitch trying to get to Ronaldo. Both invaders were fortunately dealt with swiftly and the game was not halted for too long. Ronaldo and the rest of the Portuguese and Turkish players appeared incredibly frustrated with the invasions, before two more entered the field of play after the final whistle.

Ronaldo is no stranger to adoring fans running on the pitch to ask for a selfie with him. Despite this, there will be serious questions raised as to the security of the players during games if four fans are able to evade the hundreds of stewards stationed around the perimeter to break onto the pitch. There will likely be an investigation into the invasions which represent yet another major security breach for UEFA.

After seeing off the Czech Republic and Turkey, Portugal sit top of Group F with six points and qualify for the round of 16. They will play Georgia in their final group stage game on Wednesday and look all-but-set to secure top spot in the group.
