ITUMELENG KHUNE REPLACEMENT! KAIZER CHIEFS URGED TO SIGN ACCOMPLISHED MAMELODI SUNDOWNS GOALKEEPER

  • Chiefs advised to sign Sundowns' Onyango
  • Khune's future uncertain at Amakhosi
  • The Ugandan keeper is 38 years old

WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have been urged to sign the one player who can replace Itumeleng Khune by club legend Brian Baloyi.

The three-time Premier Soccer League title winner has surprisingly named Mamelodi Sundowns' veteran goalie Denis Onyango as the perfect man to fill Khune's void.

Baloyi has picked the Ugandan as the man to step into the South African finest shoes when he decides to retire or step away from Chiefs.

WHAT WAS SAID

"We have Itumeleng Khune, but we don’t know what’s going to happen with him. So you need an Onyango with vast experience, and he can give you two or three seasons,” Baloyi told FARPost.

"Same way that Arthur Baartman did, may his soul rest in peace. He came in and started pushing Khune to a point where he started playing regularly.

''You need someone like that, someone who will come in and push these young players so that they lift up their game. If Kaizer Chiefs were to want to sign a goalkeeper now, I would sign Onyango.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper's contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Amakhosi extended Khune's contract last year with the agreement that he would retire and take up the managerial role at the club when he retires.

However, the 36-year-old fan-favourite star was seemingly not ready to call it a career as he insisted he still wanted to play.

On the other hand, the 38-year-old Onyango has been a second choice for Rhulani Mokwena after the preferred Ronwen Williams.

WHAT'S NEXT?

One-club man Khune has been with the Soweto giants since the 2004/05 season when he was promoted from the club's academy.

It remains to be seen whether he will leave or take up a coaching role the club has suggested for him.

Downs legend Onyango is also nearing his retirement. Spider-Man's wish is likely not to happen come the end of the month.
