EX-MAN UTD BOSS RALF RANGNICK'S TRANSFER WISHLIST AS HE LAYS OUT DEMANDS FOR CLUB RETURN

If Ralf Rangnick is to return to club football with Bayern Munich, he's keen for things to go differently from his short-lived Manchester United spell.

The 65-year-old, who spent half a season as United's interim boss during the 2021-22 campaign, wasn't permitted to make any signings during his one transfer window. However, he is reportedly after complete transfer control at Bayern.

Rangnick is currently in charge of the Austria national team, but Bayern are said to be keen to bring him in when Thomas Tuchel leaves in the summer. Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann had both been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena, but both have chosen to stay put.

United had a tough time of things under Rangnick, who took over with the team seventh in the league and could only lead them one place higher. Had he been permitted any of the names on his six-man transfer shortlist, though, things might have been different.

According to Salzburger Nachrichten, Rangnick could be confirmed as Bayern boss within a matter of weeks. He wouldn't take over immediately, though, instead arriving after Austria's Euro 2024 campaign.

The paper indicates there's a potential sticking point, though. Rangnick is said to want the final say on player recruitment, above director of sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund.

How might things have panned out with Rangnick enjoying similar privileges at Old Trafford? Potentially pretty well, though that assumes the targets would have wanted to link up with him.

"There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club," Rangnick told BILD in October 2022. "But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

"That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic. We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, [Erling] Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach."

Rangnick, who spent time as RB Leipzig boss, was forced to watch on as Gvardiol and Nkunku eventually made Premier League switches in the summer of 2023. Former Red Bull Salzburg frontman Haaland, of course, ended up at Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and top-scored in the Premier League in his first season.

Vlahovic and Diaz both completed moves during Rangnick's one window in England, but not to United. Diaz has settled in at Liverpool, while Vlahovic has had things a little tougher since his £60m move from Fiorentina to Juventus.

Morata is the only one of the six to still be where he was, though the Atletico Madrid man was on loan at Juve when Rangnick was in England. The former Chelsea frontman needs just one more goal to end the campaign with his best-ever goalscoring season, having bagged 20 in 44 games so far this term.

Whoever's in charge of transfers at Bayern this summer, there will be a feeling they need to make a big splash. The club have failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in more than a decade and will be after an immediate response.
