DERBY COUNTY END TWO-YEAR CHAMPIONSHIP EXILE AFTER HOLDING THEIR NERVE ON FINAL DAY

Derby County have been promoted back to the Championship after beating Carlisle United on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams dropped out of the second-tier two years ago after being deducted 21 points by the English Football League for entering administration and were unable to return at the first attempt last term.

But Paul Warne's side headed into the final day knowing that bar an almighty disaster at home to already relegated Carlisle, they were up given they needed just a solitary point to pip Bolton to the second automatic promotion spot.

An early goal from academy graduate Max Bird helped settle any nerves at Pride Park. And James Collins' strike after the break was enough to see the Rams over the line.

Only Bolton stood a chance of ruining Derby's afternoon. However, the third-placed side would need to beat Peterborough, directly below them in fourth, and secure a four goal swing in their advantage.

The two play-off contenders played out an enthralling 3-3 draw at London Road, though, to leave Derby with a free run at second place.

The Rams will join champions Portsmouth in the Championship next season after rebuilding under the stewardship of owner David Clowes, who purchased the club in 2022.
