ANTHONY GORDON SAYS LIVERPOOL 'MACHINE' ALSO DOES TRICK THAT LEFT GARY NEVILLE 'MESMERIZED'

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon has credited Liverpool's Mohamed Salah with helping him in a particular part of his game. Gordon has had a very productive season for Newcastle, with the 23-year-old scoring 10 Premier League goals and recording eight assists in 30 games.

Gordon joined the Toon from Everton in a big-money move in January 2023 and has proved a hit with Newcastle fans ever since. In a recent episode of Gary Neville's The Overlap Podcast from Sky Bet, he's attributed part of his success to Salah in an area of the game most fans wouldn't expect.

Gordon told Neville that in the days leading up to games he 'visualizes' what could happen on the pitch, as part of his preparation. Gordon then stated that he'd learned that Salah does the same thing in the build-up to Liverpool games.

“I’m absolutely mesmerized in a way that I’ve never heard a football player talk actually with this level of depth and thought and preparation, I don’t think at any point in their career, let alone someone who’s at your stage of your career,” Neville said after being told by Gordon about his preparation.

“There may be people who do the same thing," Gordon replied. "Probably there’s loads who just haven’t spoken about it. But like I said, some footballers like to think less and just turn up and play and trust their instincts. But I just love the mindset of just getting in that place before I’m already there.

“And actually, I heard Salah talk about it. And that’s where I took even more interest because I see him as an absolute machine, a winner. People like that, you’re not going to go far wrong following what they do.”

Despite a recent slump in form, Salah has had yet another season full of goals, with the Egyptian scoring 24 in all competitions for the Reds, 17 of which have come in the Premier League. The 31-year-old has also provided 13 assists across all competitions, nine of which have come in the Premier League.

Liverpool.com says: Visualizing what could happen in a match is not a facet of the game many players talk about publicly, as Gordon alluded to, yet there's no doubt it happens. It's nice for Gordon to highlight Salah as a role model in this particular attribute, considering his status as one of the best players in Premier League history. If Gordon goes on to score half the goals Salah has done, then he'll have had a very good career.
